The Celtic dragon has been a creature of myth and legend for centuries throughout the Celtic world. The Celtic dragon chiefly represents the principle of fertility (creation of the earth and the appearance of life... a combination of elements.)  The first living cell was born out of the earth, fertilized from the sky by wind and water. This was the union which produced the Celtic dragon. Every year the same process takes place.

The Celtic dragon is very important to the Celts. When Druids (ancient and current) survey the land they speak of the dragon lines (ley lines) of the land. (Today we use the term ley lines, e.g. "ley of the land".) These dragon lines were (and still are) very important to the Celts. It is where these lines meet that the most energy comes up through the earth. It is the prefferred meeting place for Celtic ritual.

To the ancient Celts, "the ley of the land" meant how the magic or cosmic forces flowed through and affected an area, or how the area affected those forces. The Celts believed that Celtic dragons were creatures of a parallel world. It was believed that their presence affected the ley of the land and places associated with dragon legend were nerve centers, often associated with sites associated by ancient sanctity.

The path of the dragons is called a vein. It was a critical flow of energy or ley of the land (a line where power comes up through the earth). In ancient thought, the spots where dragons crossed often were these veins of power or energy. The spots where the dragon lines crossed were thought to be where Celtic dragons rested because those spots are known for having heightened power. Stonehenge is thought to be one of those places where Celtic dragons slept. In addition, some people believe that a Celtic Cross (a cross surrounded by a circle) symbolizes the crossing ley lines, thus how the circle of life should be centered on the power of the dragon lines.

Even King Arthur was burdened by dreams of Celtic dragons. Most notedly... around the time of Sir Mordred's conception, and before his death. In King Arthur's final dream he is eaten by dragons... and in his battle with Sir Mordred he is killed.  In certain Celtic mindsets of the ancients, it was thought that when a King sees a "Celtic dragon", ruin will come to the land.

It is clear that a prominant Celtic symbol is the Celtic dragon symbol. It is continuously in the Celtic mindset. It is in the story telles stories, in the craftsmen's crafts, and prominantly on the flag of Wales, in which their motto reads: Y Ddraig Goch Ddyry Cychwyn, The Red Dragon Leads the Way. Certainly a Celtic dragon tattoo is an honorable choice.
